San Diego Varicose & Spider Vein Treatment
Advocates of total health and healing, San Diego Vascular Center constantly strives to encourage a healthy lifestyle through proper diet, nutrition, and exercise. A healthy lifestyle is an essential part of vein disease prevention, which can reduce your risk of experiencing unsightly varicose veins and spider veins. In addition to preventing aesthetic imperfections, a healthy lifestyle can greatly limit the risks of more serious medical complications associated with vein disease.
Reducing Risks
You can personally minimize your risk factors for vein disease by altering your lifestyle or habits. While prevention is crucial, you can also reduce the appearance and health risks of varicose and spider veins in early stages by wearing compression stockings. Wearing compression stockings can provide additional support for your legs, which reduces pressure in the veins and the pooling of blood within the vessel. When the veins are supported, they are less likely to progressively dilate and form blood clots. Wearing compression stockings during extended periods of standing or sitting, such as on car rides or plane trips, is often recommended.
If you are overweight, talk to your doctor about your ideal body weight and establish a plan to achieve that goal. Weight loss can help reduce pressure on the veins in the legs, which can make enlarged veins, including varicose and spider veins, less prominent. Regular exercise such as walking or biking is also important to strong vascular health. Exercise activates the muscles of the legs, helps reduce pressure in the veins, and improves circulation.
Skin care is also a crucial component of vein health. A simple step in preventing the wound complications of venous disease is to apply moisturizing cream to the skin twice daily. This helps avoid eczema or dry skin, which is most prone to injury and infection. It is also important to understand your family history. If there is significant history of vein problems involving other family members (including varicose veins, sores, wounds, or blood clots) then you may be at greater risk. As such, paying close attention to common signs and symptoms of vein disease and taking preemptive measures to improve your vein health becomes more important.
